The Misunderstood Motor City

It occurred to me after talking with some friends that only a few of my classmates have a good idea of what Detroit is like today and its history.

Detroit wasn’t always the city it is today, but with all the recent publicity on the city’s tragedies and corruption, I can understand the confusion.  In the industrial age Detroit was home to amazing, talented people, beautiful neighborhoods, innovation, growth and expansion.  Between 1880 and 1930 the city’s population doubled every ten years and while growth slowed in the 1940s, the city continued to expand well into the 1960s.

      

Detroit has some of the most significant Art Deco Architecture in America.  In the city’s prime, architects such as Eero Saarinen, Mies van der Rohe, Wirt Rowland built amazing structures and neighborhoods throughout the city.

I mean the scale of Detroit is absolutely amazing, take a look at the image below.

Three of the most significant US cities can fit inside the boundaries of Detroit with room to spare.  Further this doesn’t consider the extensive metropolitan areas that have grown up around Detroit since the 1950’s and 1960’s.  The movement of people out of the city into the surrounding area was prolific and so the surrounding cities have grown significantly (Southfield, Troy, Royal Oak, Bloomfield, Birmingham, Mount Clemens).  Today these cities represent 5 times the population within the city limits.

One of the most amazing ways I can describe parts of modern Detroit is ‘beautifully desolate’.  You can find neighborhoods (1 mile by 1 mile in area) with only a handful of homes sparsely located across the land and the city scape looms in the distance.  It’s a bizarre dichotomy – the rural inside the urban landscape with neighborhood homes that have been reclaimed by nature.

Legitimately Detroit is slightly tragic.  Awful things have happened but it remains an amazing city.  To me the city represents the innovative nature of man: the assembly line, the modern traffic light, Ford Motor Company, techno music, Motown, the location where Thomas Edison grew up just to name a few.

I’m certainly not trying to convince anyone to drop everything and move to Detroit but simply to appreciate a once great city that has the people and the potential to be great again.  Detroit represented innovation once and some truly amazing ideas are developing again.

The Rise of SaaS and Cloud Computing

So perhaps SaaS may be usurped by another technological advancement, i.e. clouding computing.  Funny since SaaS was a great disruptor to traditional software –  software that is loaded onto the hard drive of each users computer.  Now the disruptor has become disrupted but is cloud computing superior as more aspects of computing migrate to the internet?

So we’re all clear on the terminology I’ve included some definitions of SaaS and cloud computing.

  • SaaS – software and the underlying data are hosted by a third-party and accessible by the internet
  • Cloud Computing – resources including software but also other sources such as databases and storage, are available for access over the internet

From a practicality perspective, it would be possible to say SaaS is a component of cloud computing as the cloud is ‘rather’ large.

SaaS, such as Salesforce.com, tends to support organizations through third-party hosting, but allows multiple organizations to run under the same platform thereby optimizing the structure.  In similar fashion to outsourcing human resources, SaaS allows firms to specialize in a core business and allow other firms to specialize in CRM systems but could ERP and supply chain systems be further optimized as well?  Cloud computing in contrast could be any data hosted outside the traditional realm of the business structure.  As an overarching concept of SaaS, cloud computing is then the complete removal of data and software from the organizations hosting serves to the internet.  An aspect of public property also exists in the cloud.

As quoted from the article, High Tech: The Rise of SaaS and the Cloud: “Any company can move its existing warehouse management system or enterprise resource planning solution to the cloud; that is just outsourced IT,” says Trevor Read, president of Agistix, a Redwood City, Calif.-based provider of SaaS-based logistics and transportation software solutions. “SaaS architecture, by contrast, uses the cloud to support multiple companies running on the same instance of the software.”

The benefits of Saas and cloud computing over traditional software are obvious:

Cost Structure – for small and medium sized businesses, the in-house needs of software administration is removed, allowing for reduced costs.

Simplification – a company’s internal CRM and ERP systems are hardly simple, but it is possible a firm specializing in the system could optimize based on core competencies.

Scalability – related to simplification above, specialized firms operating SaaS or cloud computing might be able to simplify the system sufficiently to allow it to scale from small to large firms.  However deployment is certainly an aspect where both SaaS and CC already excels at scalability through increased flexibility.

Efficiency – again, by removing a system from within a firm, a firm that by nature does not specialize in ERP or supply-chain systems might allow for increased efficiency.  This might be obtained through multiple organizations utilizing one system that is able to specialize in just the third-party platform.

Visability – this is one area that may benefit more from CC, as the public access would allow customers and vendors the ability to see and track their interactions with companies (ERP) and/or their packages, goods, etc. (supply-chain).

How much more information will we as individuals and organizations move into the cloud as we increasingly abandon traditional forms of computing and information storage?  Is moving an ERP or supply-chain system to third-party hosting really a good idea?

Hello World!

Here’s a little info about me and my career so far:

I am a Canadian by nationality, who moved to Tennessee when I was a child due to my father’s career.  My father is an environmental engineer who has worked for various automotive companies/suppliers.  When the automotive industry shifted to the south, he was transferred there.  Later, he and my mother moved to Michigan when another job opportunity arose.  I was raised primarily in the south but attended university in Michigan after our second move.

I completed dual degrees in International Marketing and Public Relations at Michigan State University and was a prolific student leader.  So much so that I was once fired from a student leadership position due to the advisor’s perception that I was ‘monopolizing leadership opportunities’.

I graduated, after completing three internships in unique industries (software technology, consumer products/retail, and alternative fuels) although all three internships were focused on marketing and business analysis.  I took a full time position with the alternative fuels company, Geocycle US, as a marketing/business analyst and was promoted after only 18 months to head the Marketing, Advocacy and Communications department for the 150 person organization.  I also strongly supported our parent company, a worldwide cement manufacturer, in its Governmental Affairs and Corporate Social Responsibility Department.

When the housing market crashed, the cement industry suffered significantly, and the parent company began to re-integrate Geocycle into its business units.  Massive layoffs took place beginning with the highest levels of management.  The majority of the Geocycle executives began new companies to fill the void left by the firm exiting the market.  I knew I would eventually be laid-off as well and so I began a Masters of Science in Finance degree at the University of Michigan.  My time did eventually end with Geocycle, but I was one of the final employees to be laid off.  On my last day I received calls from several of the executives asking if I could complete the same work I was doing at Geocycle, for their startups.

The moment I accepted their offers, I became an entrepreneur with three clients (all former executives).  My business/marketing consultancy grew from three clients to nine (due entirely to word of mouth) in approximately one year and I added a part time administrative assistant as well as an unpaid intern to help with the work.  I finished my degree at the University of Michigan while undertaking the expansion of my small consulting business, however I always knew I wanted an MBA (not just an MSF).  So when I saw an upcoming wane in the workload of my clients I took advantage of the situation and began the slow closure of my firm.  And now I’m at Boston College!

Some other quick facts about me:

  • The only football I follow is Michigan State and UMich;
  • I was an active member and player in the Detroit Polo League;
  • I was raised sailing on the Great Lakes;
  • My favorite decade is the 1920’s;
  • Not surprisingly my favorite author is F. Scott Fitzgerald;
  • I don’t have anywhere I consider ‘home’.

I guess that wasn’t really just a ‘little’ info about me…
